Last night, about 300 people joined us at Hillcrest School to celebrate the launch of Leeds City of Sanctuary.
Inderjit Bhogal, who founded the City of Sanctuary movement in Sheffield, spoke to us about the importance of sanctuary, the joy produced by offering and finding sanctuary, and the journey which we are starting: a journey to become an officially recognised City of Sanctuary.
We also heard from other speakers, including local people who have sought refuge or asylum here, the Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, MP Fabian Hamilton, and Miss Africa Yorkshire 2010. With excellent food provided by the cooks from Meeting Point, the excitement of a quiz, and a wide range of displays provided by organisations who are supporting us, a good time was had by all.
