A variety of events will be taking place in Leeds to celebrate Refugee Week, 17-23 June 2013 โ€“ although Leeds is having an extended celebration from 14-30 June!

Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events and activities that celebrates the contribution of refugees to the UK and promotes better understanding of why people seek sanctuary and this year is 17-23 June. For more information visit www.refugeeweek.org.uk

Events taking place in Leeds include:

Asmarina Voices (Womenโ€™s Singing Group) โ€“ Friday 14 June, St Peterโ€™s Building
Weekly singing session for refugee and asylum seeking women. Come together and share in the joy of singing. Feel free to bring young children. All welcome, no booking required. Friday 14 June, 1pm โ€“ 2.15pm First Floor, St Peterโ€™s Building St Peterโ€™s Square Leeds, LS9 8AH.

Leeds Refugee World Cup โ€“ Saturday 15 June, Thomas Danby College
This free football tournament takes place 10-4pm on Saturday and aims to bring together various Leeds-based refugee communities to celebrate diversity through football. Featuring sixteen 7 a side menโ€™s football teams competing for the winnerโ€™s trophy. The event will be family friendly with activities for children including a bouncy castle and volunteer-run face painting sessions! More info

Meeting Pointโ€™s 10th birthday โ€“ Monday 17 June, Christ Church
Invitation to past and present beneficiaries, visitors and all their partner agencies. Celebration and party with lots of food, music, entertainments and dancing. All welcome, no booking required. Monday 17 June, 3-6pm

Create a Play in a Day โ€“ Monday 17 June, One Community Centre
Women only. No experience needed! Work with an expert to create a short play from scratch in 2 half day workshops. All welcome, no booking required. 10am โ€“ 2pm, One Community Centre, Cromwell Street Leeds, LS9 7SG.

Life In Britain โ€“ Citizenship Taster Sessions โ€“ Monday 17 June, Compton Centre Library
Free learning support and guidance on how to prepare and pass the citizenship test. 10.30-12.

Rhymes from around the World โ€“ Monday 17 June, Compton Centre Library

Together for Leeds Conference โ€“ Tuesday 18 June, Civic Hall
Leeds Migration Partnership is hosting a conference on working with migrant
communities. Specialist sessions will take place in the morning on working with children and families, migrant English, destitution and welfare reform. The afternoon will focus on the migrant third sector and its future sustainability. Media Workshop for refugees and asylum seekers โ€“ Thursday 20 June, One Community Centre

I am Nasrine film showing โ€“ Sunday 23 June, Hyde Park Picture House
โ€˜I am Nasrineโ€™, a film about an Iranian brother and sister who come to seek asylum in England, will be showing in the Hyde Park Picture House during Refugee Week and is a great film which gives an insight into the experiences of many seeking asylum in the UK. The film will be shown at 2.15 on Sunday 23rd June at the Hyde Park Picture House, on Brudenell Road in Hyde Park. More info
