A variety of events will be taking place in Leeds to celebrate Refugee Week, 17-23 June 2013 – although Leeds is having an extended celebration from 14-30 June!

Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events and activities that celebrates the contribution of refugees to the UK and promotes better understanding of why people seek sanctuary and this year is 17-23 June. For more information visit www.refugeeweek.org.uk

Events taking place in Leeds include:

Asmarina Voices (Women’s Singing Group) – Friday 14 June, St Peter’s Building
Weekly singing session for refugee and asylum seeking women. Come together and share in the joy of singing. Feel free to bring young children. All welcome, no booking required. Friday 14 June, 1pm – 2.15pm First Floor, St Peter’s Building St Peter’s Square Leeds, LS9 8AH.

Leeds Refugee World Cup – Saturday 15 June, Thomas Danby College
This free football tournament takes place 10-4pm on Saturday and aims to bring together various Leeds-based refugee communities to celebrate diversity through football. Featuring sixteen 7 a side men’s football teams competing for the winner’s trophy. The event will be family friendly with activities for children including a bouncy castle and volunteer-run face painting sessions! More info

Meeting Point’s 10th birthday – Monday 17 June, Christ Church
Invitation to past and present beneficiaries, visitors and all their partner agencies. Celebration and party with lots of food, music, entertainments and dancing. All welcome, no booking required. Monday 17 June, 3-6pm

Create a Play in a Day – Monday 17 June, One Community Centre
Women only. No experience needed! Work with an expert to create a short play from scratch in 2 half day workshops. All welcome, no booking required. 10am – 2pm, One Community Centre, Cromwell Street Leeds, LS9 7SG.

Life In Britain – Citizenship Taster Sessions – Monday 17 June, Compton Centre Library
Free learning support and guidance on how to prepare and pass the citizenship test. 10.30-12.

Rhymes from around the World – Monday 17 June, Compton Centre Library
Stories and Rhymes from around the world: Storytelling and rhyme time activity for children. 2-3pm. Please book a place with Bernadette on 0113 336 7684. Email [email protected].

Together for Leeds Conference – Tuesday 18 June, Civic Hall
Leeds Migration Partnership is hosting a conference on working with migrant
communities. Specialist sessions will take place in the morning on working with children and families, migrant English, destitution and welfare reform. The afternoon will focus on the migrant third sector and its future sustainability. Family Party – Wednesday 19 June, One Community Centre
Family gathering, fun, food, drawing and craft activities, face painting, henna, quiz for kids with answers, therapeutic massage offered by Red Cross volunteers. No booking, just come along. Wednesday 19 June, 4pm – 7pm,

World Food Day – Thursday 20 June, St Aidan’s Community Hall
PAFRAS, the British Red Cross and Refugee Action will be jointly celebrating with our World Food Day event at the PAFRAS drop-in. All welcome. 10-3pm St. Aidans Community Hall, Elford Place West, Leeds LS8 5 QD

Media Workshop for refugees and asylum seekers – Thursday 20 June, One Community Centre
Free media workshop from Black Health Initiative raising awareness of various health issues in an innovative way through Rap, perform poetry to music. 4-7pm at the One Community Centre, Cromwell Street, Leeds, LS9 7SG. Book your place by calling 0113 307 0300. More info

Refugee Action Tea Party – Friday 21 June, Smithfield House
Afternoon tea party with cakes and hot drinks All welcome, no booking required. 2pm – 4pm, Smithfield House, 94 North Street, Leeds, LS2 7PN.

Wonderful Women of the World – Friday 21 June, West Yorkshire Playhouse
Women only event. Informal gathering. Celebrating the achievements, networking, fun, entertainment, dancing and international food. All welcome, no booking required. 10.30am -12.30pm, West Yorkshire Play House.

I am Nasrine film showing – Sunday 23 June, Hyde Park Picture House
‘I am Nasrine’, a film about an Iranian brother and sister who come to seek asylum in England, will be showing in the Hyde Park Picture House during Refugee Week and is a great film which gives an insight into the experiences of many seeking asylum in the UK. The film will be shown at 2.15 on Sunday 23rd June at the Hyde Park Picture House, on Brudenell Road in Hyde Park. More info

Together for Leeds Cultural Day – Sunday 30 June, Oxton Fields
