Congratulations to Allerton CoE Primary and Leeds City Academy who received their Schools of Sanctuary Awards at the recent Award Ceremony at Leeds Civic Hall with the Lord Mayor.
The schools submitted their applications in the spring showing how they fulfil the Learn, Embed and Share criteria. Both schools provide opportunities for staff, management and governors to learn about refugee, asylum and wider migration issues. They give examples of having decolonised their curriculum, giving children plenty of opportunities to read texts from outside the white, British context.
They have embedded the concepts of welcome and belonging in school and celebrate many religious festivals such as Eid, Nowruz and Lunar New Year. Children can be part of a buddy system in both schools either to help or be helped with their reading or just getting around school.
The excellent work is shared in the community. Parents are offered the opportunity to take an active role in their child’s education and have access to interpreters if needed. Congratulations LCA and Allerton CoE on submitting your evidence and gaining your SoS Award!
